Wall Street 101 Students Learn about Philanthropy

Philanthropy 101 was founded in 2014 by Trustee Joel Frydman. The competition continues to inspire Oakwood students to consider the impact and importance of charitable giving. In mid-November, as part of “Charity Week”, Juniors and Seniors enrolled in Wall Street 101 at Oakwood High School split into groups to learn about local area philanthropies through interviews and site visits. In 2023, students selected five local nonprofit organizations for in-depth study and analysis—Clothes That Work, For Love of Children, Families of Addicts, Maple Tree Cancer Alliance, and Victory Project.

For their class final, the students present to a group of community judges consisting of Oakwood Schools Foundation Trustees Emma Butler, Dori Spaulding, Yusaku Kawai and Maria Beecher as well as industry leaders Mackensie Wittmer of The National Aviation Heritage Alliance and Vince Russell of Johnson Investment Counsel. Cash awards for organizations are then determined based on these final presentations. This program has a lasting impact on students and seeks to foster the spirit of charity and philanthropy.

Endow Philanthropy 101

Donor support is not only instrumental in facilitating the program but also determines the financial awards available to be granted to the participating nonprofits. By supporting Philanthropy 101, donors not only nurture the next generation of philanthropists among Oakwood Schools students but also directly benefit local charities. This program is a bridge between education and community service, fostering a culture of giving and social responsibility.

Efforts are underway to endow the Philanthropy 101 Program. Through endowment, the popular program will be available to Oakwood students for years to come.
